BRASIL! Focus on contemporary Brazilian art
Ettore Fico Museum, Turin (October 30, 2019 – February 16, 2020)
Brasil! exhibition includes works by well-known contemporary artists such as Vik Muniz, Ernesto Neto, Adriana Varejao, Laura Lima, OPAVIVARÁ! and the young Alexandre Maxwell. The exhibition, whose title “BRASIL! Focus on contemporary Brazilian art” is a reference to the eponymous film produced by Terry Gilliam in 1985. The focus is on the latest generations of contemporary Brazilian artists who have marked a turning point and outlined, in the international art scene, new routes and new paths, placing themselves as a real school and current. The scents of the earth and flowers, the “saudade” of bossa nova and the exciting panache of the samba, the improbable architecture of the favelas and the rationality of the capital Brasilia designed by Oscar Niemayer, blend and merge through the specificity of the materials used by the artists who are derived directly from nature and from industrial production: the spices for Ernesto Neto, the earth and wood for Matheus Rocha Pitta, the simple household and common objects (hammocks or crockery or pots) for Opavivarà!
